One of the learning objectives in this course is preparation for the longer-term international assignment. Start by studying chapter 19 and the related module.
Spending some time abroad can advance your career. For instance, a study by Rosetta Stone (Language software) showed that over 70% of senior executives at U.S. companies believe that expatriate assignments are important for people on a leadership track (McMunn, 2016). In this assignment, you will pretend that you have accepted a two-year expat assignment (your current position or something similar) in a country of your choice.
The choices are as follows:
1) Moscow, Russia
2) New Delhi, India
3) Mongolia
4) Johannesburg, South Africa
5) Lima, Peru.
If you have a family, ask them how they would feel about your accepting a two-year expat assignment and what are the conditions would be acceptable for them to uproot their lives to move to a foreign country. If you do not have a family ask a friend or acquaintance who does have a family what their family’s expectation would be before being willing to move to a foreign country.
Family preparation for expat assignments is extremely important. McMunn (2016) states “there are a lot of benefits to negotiate for, you’ll need to pick your battles and prioritize what means the most to you and your family. It is incredibly important to choose them wisely” (np). This means choosing a school, housing, and other allowances carefully.
When you are choosing the country, you should be realistic. Some cities are more expensive than you can even imagine. “Luanda, the capital of Angola, has regained the top spot as the world's most expensive city for expats, pushing Hong Kong back into second place, “ reported by BBC News (2017, np). Angola is a developing country and if you want to live like you were living in the suburbs of Atlanta, New York City, Chicago, Orlando, Miami, etc., your rent could be more than USD10k a month.
