- Now that you’ve started to explore our interactions with others, let’s apply that to ourselves! Take the Human Relations Abilities Assessment Questionnaire, then apply it to the discussion.
As you reflect on the questionnaire, identify some of the statements that reflect skills on which you need to improve. How can improving these skills help you in your career? How can improving on them help you balance your work and social life? Now, identify some of the skills at which you are proficient. Why are these skills important to an organization? - Now that you have explored several ways of communicating, some more effective than others, let’s make them work for you!
Briefly describe the communication process, including a few filters that distort messages. Now, describe how you can use your knowledge of the process to improve the way you communicate. Last, discuss the ways in which information flows through an organization. Which process do you think is most influential?
3. We all have different communication styles, and it is certainly easier for us to get along with some types more than others!
After reading the chapter, briefly describe each of the four communication styles. Then, assess your communication style – which one are you? With which style is it most easy for you to communicate? Which style is most difficult for you? Why?
Give an example of when someone used a communication style that was difficult for you.
- Self-esteem certainly affects how we carry ourselves. How do people with low self-esteem behave differently from those with high self-esteem? This is something that almost all of us can work on! Of the strategies discussed in chapter 4, which 2 or 3 can you use to improve your self-esteem?\
5. Now that we’ve worked on ethics, let’s apply that theory to some real-world situations! Using Table 5.1 on clarifying and developing values, take yourself through the five-part process. Now, considering the influences that shape your values, pick three of the situations from the “What Will You Do?” questions. Use your personal value system to discuss ethical dilemmas and find ways to resolve the values conflicts.
For each dilemma, discuss what you’ll do and explain why. Then, take the opposite point of view. Explain why someone else might make a different choice.
