Instructional Theories

Once you have identified a classroom or instructional challenge and possible technology solution, you must develop and implement a lesson plan that incorporates the selected technology effectively. When developing lessons, alignment to content and technology standards help to ensure that the lesson is meaningful and assists in the achievement of curricular goals.

Refer back to the “Selecting Technology to Enhance Learning” template you completed in Topic 4 and select one of the problems from the template as the basis for a lesson to which the technology tool could be applied. Using the “COE Lesson Plan Template,” develop a lesson plan to address the problem and implement the technology you selected in the Topic 4 assignment. Ensure the lesson plan is aligned to content standards and at least two student technology (ISTE-S) standards and applies to the grade level with which you are most interested in working.

Write a 250-500 word reflection, addressing the following.

Explain how the ISTE-S technology standards meaningfully enhanced the lesson plan.
Discuss how the ISTE-E standards helped you create the lesson plan and will assist you in delivering the lesson to students.

ISTE-E Standards Used:

  • 2.c Learner Variability: The lesson plan incorporates differentiated instruction, allowing students to choose podcasts based on their interests and learning styles (fiction, historical fiction, mystery).
  • 3.d Professional Learning and Collaboration: The lesson plan encourages collaboration as students discuss podcast elements in small groups and share their creative writing ideas.

Reflection:

The chosen ISTE-S standards significantly enhanced the lesson plan by providing a framework for integrating technology to achieve specific learning objectives.

1.6 Creativity and Innovation: Traditionally, brainstorming creative writing ideas relies on text-based prompts or visual aids. Podcasts offer a fresh and engaging alternative. By listening to well-crafted audio narratives, students are exposed to diverse storytelling styles, character development techniques, and suspenseful plot structures. This exposure can spark their imaginations and provide inspiration for their own writing.

Furthermore, the act of creating their own podcasts (optional extension activity) encourages students to be innovative. They need to develop a compelling narrative, consider sound effects and music for ambiance, and potentially add narration or dialogue. This multi-faceted approach allows students to express their creativity in ways beyond traditional pen-and-paper writing assignments.

3.a Research and Information Fluency: Podcasts serve as a valuable research tool for students to analyze successful storytelling techniques. By listening to a podcast with strong character development, for example, students can identify character traits, motivations, and how the author uses dialogue to reveal personality. This analysis fosters their understanding of these narrative elements and equips them to apply them in their own writing.

The ISTE-E standards provided a valuable framework for developing and delivering the lesson plan while ensuring inclusivity and student-centered learning.

2.c Learner Variability:

The lesson plan acknowledges diverse learning styles and preferences. Students can choose podcasts based on their personal interests, whether it’s science fiction, sports, or historical fiction. This allows them to connect with the material on a personal level, fostering greater engagement with the learning objectives.

3.d Professional Learning and Collaboration:

The lesson plan promotes collaboration by encouraging small group discussions after listening to podcasts. Students can share insights about the storytelling techniques they observed, fostering critical thinking and peer learning. Additionally, the optional podcast creation activity can be completed in groups, encouraging students to brainstorm ideas, share responsibilities, and practice communication skills.

By incorporating the ISTE-S and ISTE-E standards, this lesson plan leverages technology to create a more engaging and effective learning experience for middle school students while promoting creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration skills.
