Infant Community- Parent/Teacher Observation

. Select one of two of the following observational videos: Focused Observations Chapter 8 Video 18dInfant Community- Parent/Teacher Observation

Conduct your own non-experimental observational study based on the videos. Decide what you will be observing in the video (will you look at interaction? Movement? or eye contact? There are many choices).Observe and report the behavior in two ways: quantitative and qualitative.

For the quantitative behavioral observations, use the Week 1 Coding sheet example Week 1 Coding sheet example - Alternative Formats as a guide or create your own based on the information in your textbook.
Here is an example of what qualitative observational notes look like: https://history.utah.gov/repository-item/how-to-write-field-notes/
For the qualitative behavioral observations, decide what you want to observe and report this in a qualitative manner.
Use Chapter 8 in your textbook as a guide. You only need to select one behavior to observe for this lab assignment.
Here is an example of the coding process: Submit the following: Quantitative

Describe what you are observing. (The video plus what it includes and what behaviors you selected to code/observe.)
Report the Procedure. Explain exactly what and how you set up the coding. How did you quantify the behavior?
Summarize your findings in a quantitative manner. You do not need to run statistical analyses, but the way you report the information should be consistent with quantitative research.
Include your recording sheet (where you wrote down the behaviors).
Qualitative

Describe what you are observing. (The video plus what it includes and what you selected to observe.)
Report the Procedure. Explain exactly how you are observing this. What type of information are you interested in? What is your behavioral category?

Procedure: The video will be observed three times. During each observation, the number of infant vocalizations will be recorded at 10-second intervals using a coding sheet. The total observation time will be 3 minutes (180 seconds). Quantitative Findings: A sample coding sheet can be found below (replace bracketed numbers with your actual counts):
Time Interval (seconds) Vocalization (Yes/No)
0-10 [Yes/No]
11-20 [Yes/No]
... ...
171-180 [Yes/No]
drive_spreadsheetExport to Sheets Total Vocalizations: [Total number of "Yes" responses] Qualitative Observation: Focused Attention Description: This study will analyze the same video to describe the infant's focused attention behavior. Focused attention will be defined as the infant visually fixating on a single object or person for at least 5 continuous seconds. Procedure: The video will be observed once. While observing, a narrative will be written describing instances of focused attention. The narrative will detail the object or person the infant focuses on, the duration of focus, and any accompanying behaviors (e.g., reaching, smiling). Qualitative Findings: The narrative will be a detailed description of the observed focused attention behaviors. An example might be: "At 00:15, the infant reaches for a brightly colored toy hanging above the crib. They maintain eye contact with the toy for 7 seconds before losing interest and looking around the room." This is just one example, and the actual observations will depend on the specific behaviors exhibited in the video.

Observational Study: Infant-Parent Interaction (Focused Observations Chapter 8 Video 18d)

Quantitative Observation: Vocalizations by the Infant

Description:

This study will analyze the video "Focused Observations Chapter 8 Video 18dInfant Community- Parent/Teacher Observation" to quantify the infant's vocalizations. Vocalizations will be defined as any sounds produced by the infant, including coos, babbles, cries, and laughs.
