In what ways does the concept of human security present a coherent challenge to traditional notions of security?

Submitted work must be well presented, legible and, where appropriate, in good Standard English.

? At least 10 academic sources consulted and used in the essay.

? Internet sources – Be careful!
? Quote, paraphrase, or incorporate sources into your analysis.
? Always reference!
? GOOD referencing system + GOOD use of sources = NO plagiarism
You need to display knowledge and analytical understanding of the topic i.e. capacity to critically
engage with the subject matter.
DESCRIBING THE TOPIC IS NOT ENOUGH.
To do this you can:
¥ Compare and contrast views and ideas from different sources/arguments.
¥ Challenge existing arguments, supported by evidence.
¥ Show awareness of the possible counter-arguments to the line of argumentation you take.
¥ Relate the conceptual material to current events/‘real-life’ examples.
¥ Use evidence to support statements/arguments, such as examples from real life or from authors in
the literature, official documents, case studies, etc.
¥ Think about the feedback from presentations.
Answer the question, address it throughout the essay.
Be clear about the concepts/assumptions underpinning your argument:
¥ Consistent and accurate use.
¥ Clear outline of concepts if required at the very beginning of essay – helps delimit the
boundaries of the argument and the essay.

Clear, logical and consistent presentation of arguments.
Clarity of thought.
Essentials:
¥ Introduction.
¥ Main Body.
Conclusion.
Introduction:
¥ Clear presentation of the main line of argumentation in response to the essay question.
¥ Clear presentation of the concepts and examples (if any) that will be used to develop the
argument.
Brief overview of the organisation of the material into ideas, arguments, essay sections i.e. what
is the rest of the essay going to look like?
Main Body of the Essay:
¥ Develop your ideas/statements/arguments; do not simply describe facts.
¥ Make use of evidence to support your arguments and engage with possible counter-arguments and
criticisms to your line of argumentation.
¥ Detailed elaboration of ideas/statements/arguments, either conceptually, empirically or both.
¥ Present ideas/arguments one at a time, each in a different paragraph, in a logical sequence
determined by your overall line of argumentation. Show a priority when organising ideas/arguments,
know what the important elements are.
Conclusion:
¥ Summary of the main points made in the essay.
¥ State your conclusions in relation to the essay question – that is, in relation to your overall
line of argumentation in response to the essay question.
¥ Do NOT add new ideas/arguments in response to the essay question – these should always go in the
main body of the essay.
Distinction 70 and over: work demonstrates excellence in many of the following areas:
