IN THE WAKE OF DISASTER

Identify a recent disaster.
Recall a recent disaster in your area such as a fire, tornado, flood, earthquake, or other disaster. Using your library's newspaper databases and/or online news services, locate articles covering this disaster.
Step 2
Examine the results of the disaster.
Read the articles with a focus on the extent of the disaster, the people affected by the disaster, and the response to the disaster by community, public health, law enforcement, and other emergency services organizations.
Step 3
Identify how organizations responded to the disaster.
Make a list of the community, public health, law enforcement, and other emergency services organizations that responded to the disaster.
• Identify services that were provided by the organizations.
• Determine how long the services were needed.
• Identify the organizations that provided health-related services.
• Look for evidence of preparedness by these organizations to provide coordinated services.
Step 4
Write the summary.
In a three-page summary, include the following points:
• Describe the disaster and the people affected by the disaster.
• Identify the organizations that responded and what services (including health-related services) were provided.
• Discuss the effectiveness of the preparedness to respond to this particular disaster.
