This assignment asks you to explore and apply the concept of imaginary communities to your own life. Be sure to carefully read the instructions below in its entirety before beginning.
For this assignment, you will examine how media impacts and shapes YOUR identity as a member of an imagined community or imagined nation. Global media scholars agree that media provides a
representation (among other things) of imagined communities and nations. Think about all of the identities you carry: Who are you? To what groups do you belong? To what communities or nations do you belong? Choose one to focus on for this assignment.
1) Briefly describe one imagined community of which you are a member; explain how and why this is an imagined community and your membership. Exemplary responses show a clear understanding of class concepts and connect ideas to the textbook (15 points).
2) Respond to the following about your imagined community (30 points):
· How does the media portray this community? What are some of the assumptions made about its members? Give at least one specific example to support your choice.
· What values are shared in this community? Values are important and lasting beliefs or ideals shared by a community or nation about what is good or bad and desirable or undesirable. It is what
