create a culminating research project and develop an expertise in a subtopic of their choice in the process. In order to complete this project, the students will work individually on a small series of objectives through-out the semester. Though we will periodically meet in a group setting, much of the instruction will be in an “one-on-one” dynamic as the students pursue their diverse interests. Failure to attend these meetings and complete the process in a timely manner can result in a failing grade.

LEARNING GOALS:
• Develop a deep understanding of and the ability to apply the major theoretical perspectives in American politics.
• Ability to apply research methods skills.
• Improve “portable” skills: reading comprehension, critical and analytical thinking, and verbal and written communication.
• Produce a 15-20 page research paper that conforms to the standards in the discipline of Political Science.
• Present the research paper in a formal presentation to a larger audience.
