How literature reflected the rise of early America from a colony to a nation.

In class, we’ve traced how literature reflected the rise of early America from a colony to a nation. Along the
way, authors explored issues like personal liberty, religious freedom, slavery and abolition, the rights of
women and nationhood in fiction, poetry and nonfiction. Choosing one of the works on our syllabus, analyze
how that work made an impact on early America, either directly or as part of a larger movement or belief.
You are required to support your main idea with relevant examples from the text and at least two scholarly
sources found through the Sherrod Library’s database collection (such as Literature Resource Center,
JSTOR or Project Muse); you may also cite the author biographies in the Norton Anthology but not generalinterest websites like Wikipedia.
