History

Order Description Web Project Due: October 30, 2016 Between 1877 and the 1930s, the American people expanded across the globe, fought the Native Americans in the west, and experienced the effects of the Industrial Age. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle Online website gives us a unique opportunity to experience how the most important national/international events were reported and viewed by the people of the time. It also provides a detailed portrait of what ?ordinary life? was like in one of the most important cities in the US. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle can be viewed through the following link: https://bklyn.newspapers.com Please note that the easiest way to access the paper is by right clicking on the link and opening it in a new window (outside of eLearning) or by cutting/pasting the link directly into your browser. After examining the newspaper on two specific dates during the 1920s-30s, write a short paper of about three pages summarizing your observations. The paper should focus on one aspect that you found most interesting/surprising about the life of ?ordinary? Americans during that period and how life changed during those very turbulent decades. In other words, the paper should not focus on national issues, national politics, etc. but rather on something that would have directly affected your life if you had lived during that time period. In trying to decide on a topic, pay special attention to the advertisements, how local stories were reported, business dealings, sports, fashion, social life, etc. Your paper could focus on anything from the importance (or lack thereof) of sports in daily life, the employment opportunities for women or other minorities, the reporting of crimes, etc. and then analyze why it is significant to an understanding of the people of the time. The dates, which should be analyzed, are your birthdates for each of the two decades-- using the last digit to determine the year. In other words, if you were born on July 11, 1975, you should analyze the editions of 7/11/1925 and 7/11/1935. If you were born on September 17, 1982, you should analyze the editions of 9/17/1922 and 9/17/1932. If you were born on November 15, 1990, you should analyze the editions of 11/15/1920 and 11/15/1930. In order to read the newspapers on your birthdays, click on ?Add more information? (in the dialog box that appears at the center of the page) then click on ?Enter a date or range? (which will allow you to type in your birthday) and finally hit the ?Search? button. Then, click on the edition of the paper that appears on the following screen to read the paper. You will need to do this only twice-- once for your birthday in the 1920s and once for the 1930s.
