History

Description

Exam Question:

In our study of early American history, we have examined how migration and continental expansion have shaped citizenship formation as the United States developed from a colony to an independent nation, torn apart and rebuilt by the Civil War and Reconstruction.

How did the boundaries of citizenship change between the period of Jacksonian Democracy in the 1820s and Reconstruction? What rights did different groups enjoy, and what rights were prohibited to them? Explain who was excluded and who enjoyed membership in the American body politic, and how these boundaries changed following the Civil War and Reconstruction. Your essay should consider diverse groups, including women, immigrants, Indians, African-Americans, and working-class Americans.
