I learned that the Hindu-Arabic numeral system, which we use today, was invented in India around the 5th century AD. It was later adopted by Arab mathematicians, and from there it spread to Europe. The Hindu-Arabic numeral system is a place-value system, which means that the position of a digit in a number affects its value. This makes it much easier to do calculations than with other systems, such as the Roman numeral system.
