HEALTH PROMOTION PAPER

HEALTH PROMOTION PAPER The paper is a formal, research paper with a literature review. This is the only place in the curriculum where students write a formal paper, in the style of a publishable article. Do not use the first person “I”; a formal paper is written in the objective third person. Read the editorial page of a major newspaper, or the review the language in the articles that you will use to see this formal style of writing. Imagine yourself writing an article to a group of professional peers, your opinion will never be used. Only peer reviewed journal articles are to be used for the “Review of the Literature”. Internet sources may be used in the “Statement of the Problem”. Use only research journals or professional journals where articles are peer reviewed by an expert panel before publication. If you are unfamiliar with peer reviewed journals, use the Library data base entitled “ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health Source” and click the boxes entitled “Full Text” and “Peer Revierwed”. You MUST use at least 3 Peer Reviewed articles. Text books are unacceptable sources for the research paper. Part of the exercise is to familiarize students with professional research journals. RESIST USING GOOGLE SCHOLAR!!!! – and summarizing a few abstracts that you find. Google Scholar is the undergraduate go-to place for journals, but as Baccalaureate prepared nurses, it is important that you have actual experience accessing original journals. It just takes 3 clicks of the mouse. Internet sources often provide the epidemiological data (extent of the problem in the U.S. and/or local population, rates etc.) needed for the first section of the paper. Internet sources may also be used as the basis for the content outline (teaching) material. The “Review of the Literature” section of the paper however should reflect the student’s exploration of the research literature focused on the teaching subject matter. Using Internet sources in your Literature Review will significantly reduce the grading of your paper. Therefore, DO NOT use internet sourcesfor“Review of the Literature”. Final Paper should include all the following: 1. Statement of the Problem and Objectives [Already written in the Draft] 2. Review of the Literature 3. Content Outline and Implementation 4. Significance of Project 5. Ways in Which Project is Innovative 6. Evaluation Methods 7. Reference List Guidelines for Paper Paper is to be typewritten, double spaced, and written using American Psychological Association (APA) manual guidelines. Sample papers are available on the Blackboard course page. Use headings as specified below to help you organize your thoughts and the paper. Step 1: State of Problem • State clearly what the topic is and why it is important in the community you serve or in the nation • Give epidemiological data regarding the incidence or prevalence of the condition or situation. Epidemiological data can be found on the general Internet and in Healthy People 2020 (see below). • Describe your target audience, the location where the teaching will take place and why this target audience was chosen. Step 2: Project Objectives • Give the Healthy People 2020 Objectives related to your project. Go to http://www.healthypeople.gov click on 2020 Topics & Objectives, click on the subject area that you are interested in, then click on the Objectives tab next to overview. Select the Objectives that supports your project / paper and list the numbers of the objectives chosen. • List specific behavioral objectives that your target population will achieve or learn; do not write a paragraph, write a list of 3 Objectives. • These are client outcomes, not what you will do in your role as teacher. • Objectives should be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-referenced (ex. By the end of this teaching session, …) • Learn, know, understand etc. are not measureable, so they are not acceptable action verbs for your Objectives. Step 3: Review of the Literature • No Internet sources, pamphlet information or text books are to be used in this section • Use at least three (3) current articles from research / professional journals • Every Objective must be covered in this Review; use the Objectives to organize this section • Do not cite after each sentence; that disrupts the flow of reading. Once you are at the end of the material used, insert the citation. • Using the information from your articles, write information addressing your objectives. Write this section in narrative form; this section should NOT be a string of abstracts, bullets or in outline form. • Do not use quotations to prove that you used a source; only use quotations if the wording is very special. Get comfortable paraphrasing cited material, but always give credit with the citation • None of this material should come from your own experience. • See examples of papers on the course website for guidance. Step 4: Content Outline and Implementation • Write the content outline of what you will teach • Implementation includes the teaching method and activities that you would use Step 5: Significance of Project and why it is Innovative • State why the project is important and the impact it will have on the target population. • State how your project is unique or different. What makes it special? Step 6: Evaluation Methods • It is important to remember that the OBJECTIVES are to be evaluated • Detail your evaluation plan, such as a group response, a group activity, a spoken or written post-test (as appropriate), or a written pre and post test (as appropriate). • Include your actual questions for the evaluation plan. Step 7: Reference List – Using APA Guidelines • Remember, Do NOT use a long URL from the database; the reader cannot access a secured database. • Simply give the citation as if the journal is in front of you. • You may use the doi (Digital Object Identifier) number if available. Grammar/Spelling/Writing Style • Do not use I, my, or any personal references. • This paper is based on research sources and is in the form of an article. Even if your person experiences are pertinent, they cannot be used here. • By convention, do not use the title of the article or the name of the journal in your citation within the text. In APA format, only use the author’s name and the year of the publication. Source Material • In the Review of Literature, use only peer reviewed research articles. • No text books are to be used for this paper. • Cite all sources used. Failure to cite sources, including the Internet, is violation of the Honor Code.
