Health Enhancing Behaviors and Health Conditions

This week’s focus is on behaviors that are good for you, known as health enhancing behaviors. It is common knowledge that a healthy diet, regular
exercise, and enough sleep are associated with good mental and physical health, and yet recommendations for these behaviors are followed by a
minority of the U.S. population. This may be especially troubling for individuals who have genetic predispositions to major health conditions and thus a
greater risk of disability and death.
Why is it that individuals sabotage their own well-being? How do the theories of health behavior help us understand this? What characteristics of
individuals explored in Modules 1 and 2 might lead to better or worse compliance for health enhancing behaviors? What about characteristics of
individuals’ environment and community? What is being done, successfully and not, to help individuals comply with health recommendations? This
week, you will explore all these questions and seek answers specifically for your assigned medical condition. Then, you will compare this information
with that related to your team’s assigned conditions, noting similarities and differences.
