Essay Assignment #3

Answer three of the four questions.

  1. Spurred by numerous lawsuits over the years, state governments have increased their share of funding local K-12 schools. Yet lawsuits and complaints persist over whether states are obliged to ensure equity or adequacy in school funding, what formula is used to set state aid, and whether states adequately fund local education aid. Discuss these issues. Make sure you mention the disparities in school district spending that drives these lawsuits.
  2. Many people, including the former US secretary of education, Betsy DeVos, advocate for increased use of charter schools and of vouchers for private schools in K-12 education. Do these schools lead to better results than traditional public schools? What does the evidence show?
  3. What are the federal rules regarding Medicaid? How is most Medicaid funding spent? How have states coped with a rapid escalation in medical costs?
  4. How does US health care spending compare with that of other OECD countries? How do US health outcomes compare with other OECD countries?
