Group Analysis Paper
Please read carefully and follow the instruction. You will use sources from textbook to quote(Communication in Small Groups theory, process, skills) byJohn F. Cragan, Chris R. Kasch, and David W. Wright. You will not use the out side sources; however, if you really need, you can use only 1 or 2 out side sources. In case you need, here is my group members' name (Shibumi, Patrick, Daniel, Jennifer, Mariam, Tochukwu) You can use these names and create the stories related to the topic and specify the idea
For this paper, you will select a theoretical construct (or set of very closely related constructs) and apply this theoretical knowledge to the communication observed in your group. At several points in class, often at the end of class sessions, I will identify several possible topic areas that you might choose to use for your theoretical constructs. This will involve (1) identifying and defining the constructs, citing sources as appropriate, (2) identifying and analyzing the manifestations of the constructs within your group members’ communication, giving SPECIFIC incidents, behaviors, and messages from the data in your journal (explained above), and (3) evaluate and discuss the ways in which the group might improve their communication based on an understanding of the construct. For the paper, depth of analysis will be rewarded over superficial breadth; therefore, it would almost always be better to write more about fewer topics than to write less about a larger number of topics.
This paper should be approximately 5 to 7 pages and use constructs discussed in the first half of the class.
Some possible theoretical constructs to use:
Theories for leading small groups (designated leader theory, stylistic theory, motivational theory, emergent leader theory, situational/contingency theory, role-emergence theory, functional theory)
Problem-solving leadership skills
Roles in small group (task leader, social-emotional leader, tension leader, information provider, central navigate, questioner, silent observer, active listener, recorder, self-centered follower)
Effective meetings (our group turned group contract the night before its due and professor got mad because he didn’t have enough time to go over and approve it)
Specialized group problem-solving methods (six stigma, hedgehog method, crisis decision-making method)
Theory X, Y, Z
Other topics from your textbook
Pick ONE area and develop sub-points
Your paper should be written in APA style (or MLA if you really must, but only if you use it correctly). You do not need to use outside sources for these papers; what is included in your textbook (Communication in small groups: Theory, process skills, 7th ed) and in my lectures is sufficient. However, any time you use sources in your writing, you MUST identify and properly credit those sources. Always. Every time. This means that you will be citing the course textbook frequently, or citing my lectures at times. You would cite my lectures as “personal communication,” using my last name and the date of the lecture where I presented that information (you can learn more about APA style, including information on how to properly cite books and “personal communication”
