Gothic Romanticism

Order Description Baym, Nina et al. (2012). The Norton anthology of American Literature (8th short ed., Vol. 1). New York: WW Norton & Company Nathaniel Hawthorne, ?Young Goodman Brown,? p. 619-629 and ?The Birth-Mark,? p. 645-656; Edgar Allen Poe, ?The Raven,? p. 688-691 and ?Ligea,? 692-702 and ?The Purloined Letter,? p. 724-737. Papers should contain a clearly communicated, debatable thesis at the end of the first paragraph. The rest of the paper should be devoted to supporting and explaining this thesis and should use quotes and details from the literature and one source. Analysis, not factual summary, should be the focus of the paper. For example, a summary of Mary Rowlandson?s Narrative is NOT appropriate. Instead, an essay comparing her depiction of American Indians to William Bradford?s IS appropriate. In addition to referencing literature from the textbook, students are required to use one secondary source for each paper. Please do not use encyclopedias or websites. Papers should consist of 6 pages: a cover page and 4 pages of text (the final page can be a partial page), and a works cited page.
