Geography Through Music Assignment

Regional geographers use music as a tool for understanding subtle differences between realms. regions, and subregions. Song analyses allow for thoughtful. deep, and critical observations of place. Music can provide a relatable means of understanding complicated information, helping us understand, develop, and reinforce images of place.
Assignment
Choose a song that you feel provides insight into any realm, region, or subregion • Provide a 2-4 page analysis of the song, breaking it down into 4 themes: • The environment • Historical settlement • Political economy o Culture • Select a song that addresses at least 2 of the themes • Some research is expected - back up the claims you are making, and/or provide additional information on the topic discussed in the song • Consider the following questions in your analysis: • Do you feel that the song accurately represents the place's environment, history, political economy, and culture? Does the sound of the song - either its pace or musical instrumentation - support these representations? • Does the song offer a positive and utopian representation of the place or is it a negative and dystopian representation?
