This is the prompt “ For as much as we know of African American History, the experience of American slavery
has had far more influence on shaping the contours of race relations in Georgia than any other factor. Our
lectures and assigned readings have focused on the trends and tensions that have emerged from the early
experiences of Africans in Georgia. In this, Africans of different ethnic groups came together to form a resilient
culture under the auspices of oppression while interacting with multiple warring European colonizers. This
provides interesting perspectives to the experiences of early-enslaved Africans and the political, economic,
social and historical ramifications thereof. Much of this course focuses on the Georgia Low Country, the GullahGeechie people, rice production and how they were able to preserve Africanism as seen through speech and
customs throughout historical periods such as colonial America, the American Revolution, the new Republic,
the Antebellum period and the Civil War. The documentary “Family Across the Sea” examines how scholars
have uncovered the remarkable connections between the Gullah people of Georgia and South Carolina and
the people of Sierra Leone. When watched in conjunction with your readings, what is the significance of the
Gullah people and the black experience in Georgia Lowcountry?
