POETRY: “LEE, BROWN: TWO POEMS”
MEMOIR/NON FICTION: “CJ HAUSER: THE CRANE WIFE”
Select one of the given genres of materials we have discussed in class throughout the weeks leading up to Paper#1 and expand the shorter response piece to an 800-1000 words(4-5 Pages) essay with a strong thesis statement, body paragraph(where you go into actual analysis) and conclusion. Your essay will include 6 paragraphs:
- An introductory paragraph with a thesis statement (1 paragraph; approximately 150 words) 2. A summary of the text (1 paragraph; approximately 250 words)
- A strong response (3 paragraphs; approximately 600 words)
- A conclusion (1 paragraph; approximately 100 words)
In this paper, you are expected to summarize your text’s main argument. In addition, you are expected to assess how effective and persuasive their arguments are. This constitutes the 3 paragraphs of the “strong response” portion of your paper. What are the rhetorical strategies being used to communicate effectively? The inferences you draw about the material (your perspective on the material) should come from your detailed description and observation and close reading of the material.
Audience: Think of it as writing an analytical review for a college magazine. A critical response backed by an intelligent and close reading of the chosen genre makes the readers think critically about the text under consideration.
