Film Analysis Assignment
Film Analysis Assignment:
Writing Purpose and Task: For this assignment, you will select a film to critically engage with by
performing a close analysis of the craft elements at work in the film. In terms of the format of your
analysis, you should follow the structure used by our course text. It will, of course, be beneficial to
read through all of the examples provided in the book to get a good sense of what you will be
looking for and discussing in your own analysis. To that end, your assignment should include
information and explanations of the following:
• Synopsis
• Protagonist and Objective
• Obstacles
• Premise and Opening
• Main Tension, Culmination, and Resolution
• Theme
• Unity
• Exposition
• Characterization
• Development of the Story
• Dramatic Irony
• Preparation and Aftermath
• Planting and Payoff
• Elements of the Future and Advertising
• Plausibility
• Action and Activity
• Dialogue
• Visuals
• Dramatic Scenes
General Essay Guidelines: Your film analysis should be at least six single-spaced pages (your
analysis may turn out to be much longer, depending on the film). Please make sure to paginate your
document. You should use a standard 12-point font like Times New Roman or Georgia (please, no
Courier or fancy script fonts). And please set the document margins to 1 inch on all sides. I am
always happy to help with formatting questions or issues. A separate title sheet is not necessary.
