Describe your own family or one you know from your own experience in terms of stage of
development and the normative issues facing this family. Include a description of family structure, including
family roles, rules, family cohesiveness, balance between separateness and connectedness and
communication pattern. Explain how these factors impact upon the family’s ability to manage its current life
stage. Please include a genogram.
Here are more specific details of what might be included in this assignment:

  1. Choose a family and make a genogram of at least 3 generations. Details may be changed somewhat to
    disguise identity (family and given names, ages, professions, etc.).
  2. Basic identification and description of family members. Include information about the life-cycle phase of the
    family and how that might be affecting the system.
  3. Describe the Identified Patient (IP).
  4. Presenting problem as stated by the family.
  5. Identify family myths (narrative, their stories, and underlying beliefs) that support current homeostasis.
  6. Comment on the various systems (including the more invisible environmental factors) acting on the family at
    a macro and mezzo level that support homeostasis.
  7. Discuss what changes would contribute to better relationships in the family.
