Essay #2: Explication of a Poem
Assignment: The writer of an explication tries to unfold the meaning of a text by interpreting a passage line by line or word by word. These might include allusions, the denotations or connotations of words, the possible meanings of symbols, the effects of certain sounds and rhythms and formal elements (rime schemes, for instance), the sense of any statements that contain irony, and other particulars (Kennedy, Gioia 1435).
Choose one poem from our text that appeals to you and select one key passage or significant section that relates to the central idea you are developing. Focus on the passage you choose by quoting from the passage extensively to support your interpretation.
Introduction: The introductory paragraph should contain the author, title, and context of the poem you have read. Then, it should state what your position is (thesis) on that particular passage and how it relates to the poem as a whole.
Body Paragraphs: Explicate elements of the passage by using supporting details, quotes from the poem, insight, and your own commentary on the authors idea or technique.
Critical Thinking: Always digest, analyze, interpret, and evaluate what you are saying. Effective signal phrases may include: This means that, In other words, As for me, In my estimation, What it all boils down to, Given these facts, Here, one can see, Personally, I think that, As we can see.
Conclusion: Restate your position and provide final comments.
