Digital evidencing has gained importance with the increment in the digital crimes. Different software have been designed so far for extracting the digital information from the crime scenes. Among those software one of the famous software that we have used in the current course is OSForensics. The software is so far used for different activities including initiating reviewing, planning and then investigating the crime scene for acquiring the evidences. Using this software for studying images and collecting different information had been a wonderful experience till now. Examining the hard drives and analyzing the different image files revealed many different directions for carrying out investigation.
In terms of forensic toolkits indexing is referred as “the process of pre-calculating the location of keywords in advance of the search”. It is done in order to speed up the process of finding the relevant information. If indexes are not used then analyzing the documents or images would have been taking enough time which won’t be suitable for carrying out an investigation in short time period. It is one of the most helpful feature in sorting out the cases.
During the case under study, we applied indexing using different steps. It initiated with downloading the file images from the folder, starting the OSForensic software and then creating a case. Further choosing the option for “investigate disk from another machines” and then proceeding to create index. Finally after creation of indexes we clicked on start indexing and completed the process. Using indexing the time for our analysis was shortened along with carrying out a successful investigation.
