Ethnography
Order Description
describe, analyze, and critique an appropriate ethnographic book of their choice. Students should also read academic reviews of the book when they are available and cite them in their own review when appropriate. Your report should include the following:
1. Information (Title, Name, Student ID, Date, My name, Class and Section)
The introduction should provide a brief snapshot of the book . Do not forget to introduce the culture/community briefly here as well. For instance, “This ethnography describes the daily lives and economic exchanges of the ____, a people who, at the time of the research in 1965, were horticultural pig farmers in Southern Melanesia.” Be sure to include the main argument of the ethnography. Please do not start your ethnography report with grand, sweeping preamble. Stay focused.
3. Description (2 pages)
The descriptive part of the review should be about 2 pages long, and not normally longer than three. Summarize the content, giving a few well-chosen examples.
4. Analysis (2 pages)
The analytical part of the book review should be about 2 pages long. An excellent book review will evaluate the author’s research methods, their effectiveness, shortcomings and the nature of the data they produced. Did you like or dislike the ethnography? Why? How was it received by other anthropologists, here you must consult two academic reviews of the text.
5. Conclusion – One paragraph summarizing the report.
6. Bibliography or References Cited section including your ethnography and academic reviews of the ethnography.
