Sample Answer
Ethical standard: The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Code of Ethics states that journalists should “minimize harm.” This means that journalists should avoid causing harm to the people they report on, unless the harm is outweighed by the public interest.
Ethical issue: A recent news story published by the New York Times violated this ethical standard by publishing the name and address of a rape victim. The victim had requested that her name and address be withheld, but the Times published them anyway. The Times argued that the public had a right to know the name and address of the victim in order to understand the story.
