That parents should have the final say in the programs their child is involved in. They are the ultimate decision makers In the wisdom, strengths and inherent abilities of all families to be competent partners It is important to respect the family’s choices and styles of addressing issues I am a partner and helper/supporter to the family Based on my knowledge/education I am the best judge of choices and recommendations for the child and family There are many ways to do things and provide support. These will only be effective if they are a fit with the family’s life. My job is not to convince them to do it my way, but to try to translate strategies in ways that are easily adapted by the family. It is important to understand and accept what parents want even if it goes again my expertise and opinions; I do not push my beliefs on them. The family need my professional expertise and knowledge/skills to make decisions and solve problems for the child. Both parents and professionals have knowledge and expertise to make recommendations/decisions. The family knows the child best, and has the most comprehensive picture of the child’s need in the context of the family. It is important to acknowledge each family’s diverse needs and strengths when working with them. The family has valuable contributions/ knowledge to offer that will guide and assist my role in providing support/recommendations. I need their help. In my heart, I do not expect professionals to follow parent’s wishes again their own judgement. Parents are active partners/participants in identifying their needs and obtaining supports/ resources rather than clients and passive recipients of assistance. It is hard for parents to be realistic about their child; professionals are more objective/realistic.
