Environmental policy and regulations

You have learned that environmental policy and regulations are critical components to the protection of human health risks from environmental exposures. Now we will apply some of the content you learned to our discussion.

First, let’s start with some questions based on your opinion:

Recycling has slowly been integrated into the daily lives of many Americans. Today, businesses, schools, and many localities have volunteer recycling programs. What are the pros and cons of recycling being conducted on a volunteer basis rather than a mandatory one enforceable by law?
In responding to your classmates’ posts, consider how your own recycling behavior influences your perspective.

After reviewing the module notes and readings, respond to the following questions. As you develop your response, incorporate what you have learned about waste disposal and the various ways that these issues can be addressed through policy and regulation. Before you participate, be sure to watch the TedTalk “Tough truths about plastic pollution (Links to an external site.)” with speaker Diana Cohen. As you participate in the following discussion, recall what you read in the notes about the precautionary principle and the process to develop an environmental regulation in the U.S.

Discuss with your colleagues the challenges and successes with of plastic disposal. What struck you as the most significant public health issue raised in the video? Support your response.
Choose either a precautionary principle-based approach or a risk assessment-based rationale to banning these compounds from the environment, and justify your viewpoint to your classmates.
Consult the Discussion Posting Guide for information about writing your discussion posts. It is recommended that you write your post in a document first. Check your work and correct any spelling or grammatical errors. When you are ready to make your initial post, click on "Reply." Then copy/paste the text into the message field, and click “Post Reply.”

To respond to a peer, click “Reply” beneath her or his post and continue as with an initial post.

This discussion will be graded using a rubric. Please review this rubric prior to beginning the discussion. You can view the rubric on the Course Rubrics page within the Start Here module. All discussions combined are worth 35% of your final course grade.
