“Early Childhood Special Education Lesson

Once you have gathered assessment and observational data and designed goals, your job as an early childhood educator is to incorporate those goals into daily lesson plans. While incorporating individual goals, you need to make sure you teach state standards and differentiate for your students.

Collaborate with your mentor to create a lesson plan for the whole class that incorporates either a reading or writing academic standard. Complete the “Early Childhood Special Education Lesson Plan Template.” 1st grade only

Work with your mentor to schedule a time to implement the lesson and assessment with the class or a small group that includes your two identified students. Following your implementation, discuss with your mentor the strengths and challenges of the lesson, as well as the next steps for the identified students.

Procedure:

  1. Read the book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" to the class.
  2. Ask the students questions about the key details in the story, such as:
    • What did the caterpillar eat on Monday?
    • What did the caterpillar turn into on Sunday?
    • What was the caterpillar's favorite food?
  3. Have the students write down their answers to the questions on the whiteboard or chart paper.
  4. Review the students' answers with them and discuss any questions they may have.

Differentiation:

  • For students who need additional support, provide them with a picture book of the story to follow along with.
  • For students who are ready for a challenge, have them write down their own questions about the key details in the story.

Assessment:

Observe the students' participation in the discussion and their ability to answer the questions about the key details in the story.

Next steps for identified students:

  • If a student is struggling to ask and answer questions about the key details in a text, provide them with additional support, such as one-on-one tutoring or small group instruction.
  • If a student is ready for a challenge, have them write their own questions about the key details in a text or have them create a graphic organizer to summarize the key details of a text.

The mentor can provide support in a number of ways, such as:

  • Helping the teacher to choose an appropriate book for the lesson
  • Helping the teacher to develop questions about the key details in the story
  • Helping the teacher to differentiate the lesson for all learners
  • Observing the lesson and providing feedback

Discussion with mentor:

The teacher and mentor can discuss the following questions:

  • What went well in the lesson?
  • What challenges did the teacher face?
  • What are the next steps for the identified students?

The mentor can also provide support to the teacher in developing strategies to meet the needs of the identified students.
