Task 4
Question 1
Discuss the role, skills and accepted/expected practice of a professional dog behavioural training instructor and behaviour modification councillor. Identify the code of practice you will adhere to when/if practicing in this field ( Use the Kennel Club Instructors Accreditation code of practice)
Question 2
Consider the case study given ( See below) – discuss the possible reasons for the behaviour, identify and further questions you would ask, explain why you would ask them and where the potential answers may lead you. Produce a programme ( or programmes) for modification of the behaviour to include immediate action, together with intermediate and further plans. Your plans may vary depending on certain aspects of the case and its development – show your understanding of the possible problems that could be encountered during modification process and explain the advice you would give if these occur
Case Study
Sophia – Cavalier, female, 9 months, entire. Came direct from the breeder at 8 weeks – no papers . No basic training except give paw. Has full run of house, sleeps with owners, screams if left downstairs, whines and can be destructive when left. Has toy box. Diet – bakers – meat, chicken, chub. Steals human food. Lives with adult 50ish male and female partner with her teenage children. Reaction to visitors and owner when coming in – jumps all over them - . Generally bouncy happy dog
Problem ( Owners description) – Screaming in public when near traffic and also when travelling
Questions I would ask – 1. why no paper work this suggest a back street breeder and only bred for money so the genetics will be poor – Reason asking to check genetics. 2. Was the mother seen – reason for asking if the mother was nervous this would be passed onto the pups 3. Was the pup socialised between 1-8 weeks with other dogs/people – reason for asking non socialisation will create a nervous dog (please do more research into this) 4. Why is the dog stealing human food – reason for asking is she being feed enough 5. Any basic training been done – reason for asking dog does not know any boundaries . 6. Who is the dogs owner the male or partner – reason for asking someone needs to take responsibility 7. When did the screaming in the car start – reason for asking as a traumatic may have happened whilst in the car which the dog associates with
Please note that the number of questions needs to be around 20 so your research should reveal these questions. You must also give a reason why you are asking them
