An accurate portrayal of international law is not as ‘traditional law’, as we understand it in the context of national or municipal legal systems. Rather, international law is more akin to a set of guidelines which states have discretion as to whether or not to comply with depending on if the state in question perceives it to be in their best interest to do so.
