Digital Logic Project

1 Instructions
• Handout 4/13/2022; Project report and presentation slides are due 4/29/2022
• Grading rubrics are attached.
• Choose one project from the four options.
• The deadline is a hard deadline, there is no extension. Any works submitted after the
deadline will not be accepted.
• Students work as a team (2 students in each team, you need the instructor’s permission
to work individually).
• Design is only required for EEN 231. Implementation is required for EEN231L.
If you take both classes, you need to submit two reports for EEN231 and
EEN231L, respectively.
2 Student Outcome

  1. Apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental,
    and economic factors. (ABET 2)
  2. Communicate effectively with a range of audiences. (ABET 3)
  3. Function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
    (ABET 5)
  4. Develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use
engineering judgment to draw conclusions. (ABET 6)
    3 Project 1: Accumulator
A register whose inputs and outputs are connected to the outputs and inputs of an adder is
frequently referred to as an accumulator. For example, consider the input at time t1 is xt1 and
    the previous output is yt0
. The function of the accumulator is generate output as yt1 = xt1 +yt0
    .
Build a register-adder circuit which has a 4-bit input and a 4-bit output. Demonstrate that
it will function as an accumulator, that is, it will compute and store a running sum of your
data inputs. Use LEDs to show the input and the output.
    4 Project 2: Counter 1
Design a 4-bit counter that can count from 1 to 9, periodically. It should count up by 2, i.e.,
    1,3,5,7,9, 1,· · · .
    5 Project 3: Counter 2
Design a traffic light counter which counts from 9 down to 0. You can design a sequential
circuit with 7 segment display to show the numbers.
    6 Project 4: Other Ideas
Students are free to come up with their own ideas. However, sequential circuits have to be
used and students have to submit a proposal to the instructor for approval before 4/15/2021.
Students are free to use microcontrollers as long as part of the circuits are designed using the
digital logic concepts that are covered in this class.
