Design Principles and Application in the Construction Industry

Task 1 – Design and Planning (LO 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 & LO 4.1, 4.2, 4.3) Developments can be apportioned to multiple phases, e.g. design, pre-construction, construction, in-use and termination. i. Consider the design and pre-construction phases to provide your opinions on the effectiveness of the processes and procedures that occur to complete these phases. ii. Consider the construction phase and identify the roles and responsibilities of people involved with design and planning during this phase. Task 2 – Materials and Services (LO 2.1, 2.2 & 2.3) Identify and describe the considerations for the specification of materials and building services for a medium sized commercial development. Task 3 – Environment (LO 3.1, 3.2 & 3.3) i. The environment continues to play an important role in the design of developments. Identify, describe and provide reasoning for environmental factors that should be considered for a proposed development. ii. The construction industry is a leading contributor of waste in this country. Describe procedures, relating to waste, that could be incorporated into the practices of a medium sized commercial site that would develop its ecological profile. Task 4 – Technological Developments (LO 5.1 & 5.2) The last part of the twentieth century produced many developments that have changed the way in which we live and work, many continue to develop. These developments have manifested themselves in the procedures of design practices, along with production and specification for developments. Identify and describe the benefits that technological advances have brought to designers and the design process. i. Consider plant, materials and production processes to substantiate your opinions on how technological advances have improved the construction industry. ii. Provide your opinions on concepts and processes that could be developed in the foreseeable future. Writing Frame Task 1 Clearly identify the activities that occur in the first two stages, their purpose and the roles of the people involved. Consider all aspects of design and planning that occur during these phases. Consideration of limitations and restrictions in these phases need to be addressed. Identify both personal and corporate responsibilities of those identified for only the construction phase. Task 2 Consider what factors could influence the specification including client brief, location, production, function, financial, maintenance etc. The submission should focus on generalisations rather than minutiae, although your text will benefit from considered examples. Task 3 Factors for the environment should be considered in relation to design and obtaining planning permission. Site procedures should relate to best practice. Concepts for the waste procedures must relate to site, not global issues. Describing why common practices are detrimental to the environment would also be relevant. Task 4 Technological advances are not limited to software, e.g. how telecommunication has affected designers. Consider the choices that designers now have in relation to specification and the effect on their designs. Consider each topic to identify and describe the advances in technology that support your opinions. Use your considered analysis and research for your thoughts on future technological developments. Think “outside the box”.
