Demography Research Debate

While demography relies on scientific, empirical methods for data and analysis, it also involves value debates and uncertainty about future predictions. select or propose a demographic debate of your choice, and present on both sides of the issue. Based on your review of evidence and research, you’ll explain where you stand on the issue and why. Potential topics You may propose other topics as long as they are related to demography and you can identify two opposing positions to consider. The positions can relate to an ethical, policy, or scientific debate. Relevant chapter(s) for each topic are also listed. 1. Life expectancy will continue to steadily increase during the 21st century (versus reversing/slowing down. Ch. 3) 2. With an aging population, Canada’s health care system will require cuts to remain sustainable. (You can also consider other social programs, such as Canada’s pension programs. Ch. 3, 8) 3. Our health care system should prioritize quality of life over longevity (Ch. 3) 4. Canada should raise the retirement age (to make social programs more sustainable, etc. Ch. 3, 8) 5. Social spending on family friendly programs (such as subsidized daycare) will help increase a society’s fertility rate (Ch. 4) 6. Wealthy countries should encourage contraception use in less developed countries to curb population growth and/or to help poverty (Ch. 4, 12) 7. In light of declining fertility, Canada needs to encourage immigration (for the workforce, for economic growth, etc.) (Ch. 5, 7) 8. When considering internal migration in Canada, should governments favour individual rights and freedoms or the well-being of communities? (Ch. 6.)
