Choose a primary text (e.g. an essay, play, work of fiction, art object, cultural practice, or phenomenon) that has something to do with a course-related debate (historical, social, cultural, philosophical, etc.) that you would like to explore further. Develop a nuanced argument of your own that stems from careful analysis of this text/case study and your inquiry into related secondary sources, which will have emerged from your independent research. Make sure you don’t lose sight of your primary text (or its context) as you write, and that you write recursively (keep returning to concrete examples from as many secondary sources as appropriate throughout). Just as in Essay 2, you should write in such a way that your readers believe in the implications of the debate and understand your own investment in it.
