Criminalization

In this assignment, we are continuing our conversation on crime but through prisms of criminalization (the process by which individuals and populations are rendered "deviant" or "criminal"), policing, and punishment.
To facilitate this, you are required to read chapter 5, "The New Jim Crow", of Michelle Alexander's The New Jim Crow (2010). Please answer the following questions: What does Michelle Alexander mean by "the new jim crow"? How is she centering race within larger conversations of policing and punishment? According to Alexander, what are the ways in which formerly incarcerated individuals continue to be punished in American society? The second reading is "On The Run" by Alice Goffman. Please answer the following questions: 1) What is a bench warrant? 2) Why are young black boys and men on the run in Philadelphia? 3) How does the label of "fugitive" both work against and in the interests of young black men? 4) How does Goffman critique the criminal justice system?
