Criminal court proceedings in the United States

  1. Observe twelve specific criminal court proceedings in the United States (i.e., NOT civil cases, patents, or lawsuits) in videos of court proceedings the student finds online. The number and types of court proceedings required are:

o 3 arraignments (initial appearances)
o 1 preliminary hearing (probable cause hearing)
o 3 pre-trial motions
o 1 jury selection
o 1 jury trial --- at least 2 hours of observation
o 3 sentencing hearings

Students should NOT go to a courthouse. Watch videos online instead.

  1. Write a report consisting of a minimum of seven (7) pages and a maximum of ten (10) pages (single-spaced) with the following sections:

    o Cover page
    o Introduction
    o Arraignments
    o Preliminary Hearing
    o Pre-Trial Motions
    o Jury Selection
    o Jury Trial
    o Sentencing Hearings
    o 5 Reflection Questions
    o Conclusion
