Crime and Deviance Five Theories of Crime Fall 2014

Crime and Deviance Five Theories of Crime Fall 2014 Crime and Deviance Five Theories of Crime In this essay you will demonstrate your understanding of criminological theories by applying selected theories to a “case study.”  You will need to draw on external sources to make and support clear arguments.  Your work will be evaluated on three points: 1) a clear understanding of the theories by your ability to make accurate connections to the case study, 2) proper APA format citation, and 3) quality of writing.  It is expected that papers will vary greatly in structure, format and writing style, but the tips below should help structure your work. 1.    Read the book Makes Me Wanna Holler by Nathan McCall in parallel with the theory chapters in your text (Siegel Chapters 4-9), and class discussions of criminological theory.  As you do so attempt to make connections between the theories and the events illustrated in McCall’s memoir.  If you are having trouble making these connections it often helps to discuss the book and theory with classmates.  You are also always welcome to discuss the connections you are making with the instructor. 2.    Select five theories that you feel are most clearly illustrated by McCall, or best helped you understand the events discussed in the book.  Write an essay making clear connections between the theories and the book.  Explain in detail how the theories helped you understand the events discussed.  Keep in mind that the academic process is creative, you should therefore not expect the theories you select to be the same as the theories selected by someone else.  You should also not expect your interpretation of the theories to be exactly the same. 3.    Select specific instances in the book to discuss.  Instead of trying to discuss broad themes focus of specific events or happenings. 4.    While the paper is not due until the end of the semester it is best to begin putting it together while we are discussing theory in class.  This is also a good way to contribute to in-class discussions.  Start early and expect to write in drafts.
