Constructing a simple infinity field microscope to image P. falciparum in blood smears.

You have been tasked with constructing a simple infinity field microscope to image P. falciparum in blood smears.

a) Research which stain one would use for this application, very briefly describe how the stain works, and what color P. falciparum will appear in the images (3 marks).
b) The objective lens is an achromatic doublet lens using two types of flint glass. Using thick lenses (ray matrix approach), find the focal length of this lens. Tip: set up the matrices by hand and then use MATLAB to do the multiplication to save time (8 marks).
c) Why is using an achromatic lens important (1 mark)?
d) Using a thin lens approximation (lensmaker equation) determine the location of the eyepiece lens relative to the focal point of the tube lens. We need to achieve a total magnification of 100x, and the final image will be captured by a CMOS chip (6 marks).
