Because APRNs operate in a "hybrid" space—balancing clinical expertise with administrative leadership—they often find themselves at the epicenter of competing interests between physicians, staff, patients, and hospital executives.
Conflict in the APRN role generally arises from three distinct areas:
Role Ambiguity and Autonomy: Tensions can occur when the APRN’s scope of practice overlaps with physicians or when there is resistance to the APRN’s independent decision-making authority.
Interprofessional Dynamics: Disagreements often stem from "siloed" communication, differing priorities between the nursing and medical models, or power imbalances.
Patient/Family Advocacy: APRNs frequently manage high-stakes emotional situations, such as end-of-life care or non-compliance, where the family's desires may conflict with clinical recommendations.
