Comparison of two paintings

The painting on the left ("Olympia, 1863) is by Edward Manet (1832-1883) and the one on the right ("Lucille
Rhodes" 1976) was painted by an American painter, Alice Neel (1900-1984). I want you to write a two page
essay (about 800 words) comparing the similarities and differences in these two paintings. Obviously they

both show two reclining nude woman.
What elements and principles are used by both artists and which ones are evident in one painting but not

the other?
How about the woman themselves- are there clues in the paintings that tell a story about each of them?
What do the artists include in the content of their paintings that give us clues about these woman as
individuals? Go to page 92 and read the section titled "Context for the creation of Artwork" for some help

with this.
And finally, what is your personal opinion regarding these two works? Give specific reasons why you

like/dislike one or both. You will have to do some additional research about these artists in order to write a

satisfactory paper. also: do you see the long scar on the abdomen of the woman in "Olympia"? Why did the

artist include this?
What does it represent (if anything)? You will have to do some research to find the answers.
