Comparing Supplements Label to Label

  Obtain two multi-nutrient supplements. You can compare a brand name supplement to a generic supplement or, you can compare a specialty formula (men's, women's, stress, prenatal, senior, etc) with a general multivitamin. Look at each label to find the amounts of each vitamin and mineral the supplement provides and it's contribution to their percent of Daily Values. 1. Give the names of the two supplements you compared. 2. What kind of bottle is each supplement stored in (glass, plastic, dark, clear)? Most supplements are stored in dark glass bottles or solid white plastic bottle, why do you think this is? 3 .Give the amount of iron each supplement provides and it's %Daily Value. What is the UL (tolerable upper limit) for iron? 4. Give the amount of Calcium each supplements provides and it's %Daily Value. What is the UL for Calcium? 5. Give the amount of Vitamin A each supplement provides and it's Daily Values. What is the UL for Vitamin A? 6. Give the amount of iodine each vitamin provides and its % Daily Value. Which organ in the body utilizes iodine? 7. Give the amount of folate (folic acid) each vitamin provides and its % Daily Value. What is the importance of folic acid in the body? 8. You might notice that for some vitamins and minerals your supplements provide 100% or more of the Daily Values. How is it that supplements can safely provide more than a 100% of the Daily Value without risk of toxicity? 9.How many major minerals are in each multivitamin?
