The aim of the assignment is to identify and discuss some of the different ways the city is represented in a range of images, texts, representations and discourses. The report should aim to reflect some of the different ‘spatial stories’ that make up the city and which variously signify a plurality of voices, meanings and identities (often these exist in a relationship defined by tension and conflict). For example, images produced by or for the tourism or heritage industries – or urban planners and architects – might represent the city in a particular way, whereas other images might reflect different motivations, interests and symbolic meanings (which articulate the concerns and voices of local communities in the city, for example, or different groups and identities that have a stake in the city). Your report should relate the observations made to theoretical ideas and perspectives explored in the module, especially those discussed in Part 1 ‘Spatial Stories’ (Weeks 1-3). The report does not need to be structured or presented in a rigid or formal report style. It should include examples and empirical case study material based on the city you are researching along with analysis and theoretical reflection.
