Your character can be from the American North, South, East, or West but you must be someone that at some point in your story travels South to see what is happening.
The best way to do this paper is to create a dated entry and write about what you hear and see in the media or what you experience at the time and how it makes you feel.
You can double space between the dated entries, but single space elsewhere.
You are reacting to the conditions Anne and others like her experience growing up in the American South. Your character must be someone witnessing southern discrimination first hand for some portion of the 20 year period the book traces. Your journal entries will use direct evidence from the book (quotes and other information from the book—MUST BE USED AND CITED)
When writing this 3 page single-spaced essay, you need to try and address the following questions (in any order).
--Define “ethics” and “justice.” (you can do this in your intro before you start creating journal entries)
--How did oppression and discrimination evolve over time (1940s-1960s)?
--By the 1960s, what changed if anything? Was your character surprised?
--Was discrimination seen as a national problem, a regional problem, or local problem, or all of the above?
--How does the media portray the broader events in the story?
--Discuss ethical or unethical interactions you encountered in the book.
--Did your character experience discrimination before they came to the South (if they are from outside the region)? Or was discrimination new to them?
--Does your character choose to work with African Americans to help end discrimination or do they work against them?
--What problems does your character see happening within the Civil Rights movement itself (divisions, prejudices within African America society)?
