Why is it so hard to "tell a true war story"? Write an essay in which you examine O'Brien's use of imagination and invention and the difficulties posed by wartime conditions on truth-telling. Consider addressing how the author uses literary elements (i.e. narrative structure, a juxtaposition of images of beauty with images of horror, characterization, setting, etc.) to represent a clash of ideas within society about war.
