To prepare for your Final Paper (due in Week 5), complete the following written assignment and then submit it
to your instructor for feedback. Prior to working on this assignment, reflect on the work you have completed
thus far in the discussions and skills forums as it relates to your topic. Make sure to review the HIS378
Introductory Packet Preview the document and HIS378: Preparing for the Week 3 Assignment prior to starting
work on this assignment.
This assignment has three components: A preliminary draft of your introduction, an annotated bibliography, and
an outline.
Preliminary Draft of Your Introduction
For the first component, write a draft of your introduction, including your preliminary thesis statement. The
introduction must
be a full paragraph in length,
identify your topic with precision,
explain the historical context most directly relevant to your topic,
identify the key historiographic debate(s) associated with your topic, and
present a preliminary thesis statement for the Final Paper.
Annotated Bibliography
For the second component, create an annotated bibliography that includes six scholarly secondary sources
(not including your textbook). You may include three required readings provided as course materials
associated with your topic. Each source should be immediately followed by its annotation. For additional help,
you may review the Chicago Manual of Style: Annotated Bibliographies (Links to an external site.) handout by
Todd Richardson at Texas State University, and the sourcing tutorials in weeks one and two of the course.
An annotated bibliography is comprised of
a list of the your selected sources cited in Chicago Manual of Style format, and
a one- to two-paragraph summary of each source.
In the summary for the secondary sources,
identify the author’s thesis or the central focus,
list two or three main points the author makes to back up the thesis or central focus, and
identify a distinguishing feature of this study, such as
type of sources examined,
theoretical approach,
methodology, and
author’s position regarding a key debate associated with the topic.
Make sure to utilize academic voice. See the Academic Voice (Links to an external site.) resource for additional
guidance.

Outline
For the third component, develop a preliminary outline for the Final Paper. For help, you may review the
Ashford University Writing Center’s resource on Outlining (Links to an external site.).
For your outline,
compose a series of main points to support your preliminary thesis, presented in the form of topic sentences,
distinguish between the perspectives of the six scholarly secondary sources you will use in your Final Paper to
determine the organization of your work,
list which source(s) pertain to each of the main points you have outlined, and
identify similarities or divergences in key interpretations.
Prior to completing this portion of the assignment, view the Outlining (Links to an external site.) page in the
Ashford University Writing Center listed under “Writing Tools.” Format your assignment according to the
Chicago Manual of Style.
