Civil liberties and civil rights are terms that are often a bit misunderstood.
Chapters 13 and 14 do a good job of explaining the differences between these terms.
These chapters also provide some excellent information about the interaction between society and some of
our freedoms indicated by the Bill of Rights.
For this discussion please address the following:
In your own words, describe how civil liberties differ from civil rights.
Select the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, or 6th Amendment and explain the protections that amendment provides to the
population.
Indicate what you think is the most important aspect of the selected amendment.
Explain why this amendment is important, or not important to us today.
Do some research and briefly describe a Supreme Court case that involved the amendment you selected
(the site used last week would be a good place to start.) What was the issue? How did the justices decide?
What impact did this decision have on the people?
