• Clinical Assessment of a Movie Character (30 Points): Students are expected to submit a scholarly paper that describes a fictional character/case from a film. Using the information from your lectures, and your DSM-5 manual, you will complete the following:
- Description of a movie character. This information will be the foundation of your work. A clear description of the character that you are assessing. It must include a complete Biopsychosocial Assessment, along with a mental status exam. (Example of biopsychosocial assessment and mental status exam attached)
- Assessment Instruments: Select appropriate assessment instruments to assist in the diagnosis of your movie character. You can either use any standardized assessments such as the BDI or the BAI or you can use the assessments suggested in the DSM Manual. Discuss relevance and potential biases of the identified assessment. Make sure to present a sound rationale for using any selected assessments.
- Diagnosis: Provide a diagnosis for your client according to the DSM Manual including any co-occurring disorders (i.e., Substance abuse related disorders, medical disorders). Complete a Diagnosis Diagram using the format posted on Canvas.
- Diagnostic Criteria (Please refer to DSM manual for specific guidelines): Provide the criteria used to reach your diagnostic, including descriptions of the movie character’s signs and symptoms to support your clinical decision.
- Multicultural Considerations: Describe any multicultural issues that could play a role in the diagnosis or treatment of your movie character. Use the cultural formulation interview from the DSM Manual to describe any cultural context that could be relevant.
- Treatment: Report available treatments for the disorder(s) and discuss their effectiveness, based on current research and/or practice-based literature in peer reviewed professional journals. Formulate an initial treatment plan for this case. Guidelines for formatting and an example of a treatment plan will be available on Canvas.
- Medication Evaluation. Present a rationale for medication evaluation. Identify the most common medications used in the treatment of the identified diagnosis. Specify the most common side effects of such medications, as well as their implications for the counseling process.
- Wellness perspective. Formulate a wellness-oriented alternative to the primary diagnosis that represents a less stigmatizing way of conceptualizing your client. Use V, Z codes or a culturally bound category as possibilities for your alternative conceptualization.
- Legal and Ethical consideration: Discuss what legal and ethical considerations are necessary to uphold when working with this client. Discuss, if any, legal and ethical considerations that may affect the treatment while working with this client.
