Children's Literature - Other Worlds Essay

See attached Word document for instructions Instructions for the Written Assignment * It is strongly suggested that you quote directly from your textbook when you analyze illustrations, or anything else: this will help you ensure that your analyses are complete! From the first oral and traditional forms of children's literature, the dual values of entertainment and teaching have influenced the creators of children's literature. But not all works for children are reflective of what most adults might call "the real world.” The world of literature for children and young adults is populated with talking rabbits, vampires, magic and wizardry, all of which are of great interest to the audiences, whether or not adult audiences approve of their choices. For this essay, you will analyze two works of fantasy and/or science fiction. The two books that you will be analyzing are: • Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White • The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo How do the alternate worlds that the books suggest reflect or critique the historic and/or cultural contexts that produced them? Your thesis should be a statement that answers the question "How do the alternate worlds that the books suggest reflect or critique the historic and/or cultural contexts that produced them?" State your thesis at the end of your first paragraph. Create a title for your paper that reflects your thesis; and incorporates the titles of all of the children's books you're discussing in your paper. To answer this question, you will need information on the backgrounds of the authors. Remember: Follow the format of the sample MLA paper exactly, for example, use plain text for the title of your essay and the captions for your figures. Note that you need to include the titles of the book you're discussing in the title of your essay. Enlarge the illustrations in your figures, so, for example, your readers can read the text on the pages. Don't insert periods or commas at the end of direct quotes before your in-text citation, to avoid redundancy. Always italicize the titles of books, and enclose the titles of journal articles in quotation marks. 3 pages is equivalent to about 750 words. Do a word count of the body of your paper, excluding your header, title, captions, list of works cited, etc. Write at least half of a page each of description; analysis; interpretation; and evaluation. Support your ideas with specific references to resources in the Content Guides and in your textbook (Essentials of Children’s Literature 9th Edition Pearson Authors Kathy G. Short, Carol Lynch-Brown, Carl M. Tomlinson, especially chapters 8, 9 and 12). Your essay should be minimum 3 pages, written in MLA style. Please use Times New Roman 12pt font, with double spacing. Cite all references correctly in MLA format. Study the annotations in the MLA Sample Paper at the Purdue Online Writing Center and format your paper accordingly. https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/13/ IF USING CITATIONS: ONLY cite peer-reviewed sources (the following are some peer reviewed sources) In your paper, insert in-text citations, including both author last names and page numbers, for all references to peer reviewed sources, not just for direct quotes; and give complete publication information for all sources in a list of works cited, including the book you discussed.
