To provide upper-level undergraduate students with an opportunity to demonstrate critical thinking skills by writing a research paper on an approved topic related to individual and family development. 2. To improve skills in research, critical analysis, and communication to better prepare the student to write for academic or professional audiences in the future. What is expected for the research paper for this course? ? This research paper is not an essay, opinion paper, or a “how to…” type of paper (e.g., “How to Have a Quality Marriage,” “The Pros and Cons of Abortion in the United States,” “How to Prevent Child Abuse,” etc.). ? This research paper is analytical, objective, based on quantitative and qualitative research studies, and attempts to answer a research question (e.g., What are the major causes of divorce? How does having a child with special needs affect the dynamics of marriage?). It is a critical assessment of the current body of literature on the topic. Overview of Project (all parts of the project must follow APA format) ? Preliminary Search & Preparation: Identify a general topic of interest and submit topic ideas for approval. Start early, topics will be granted on a first come, first serve basis. ? Part 1: Paper Set-Up: Develop a research question. Conduct preliminary research on your topic. Locate 6-8 PDF quantitative/qualitative journal articles published between 2011-2016. Draft a cover page with a research question, draft paper introduction with thesis, and paper subheadings. Set up the format of the paper in APA style with a reference page. ? Part 2: Full Draft: Write the full draft of the paper including a cover page, introduction with purpose of the paper, review of the literature, summary/conclusion, and reference page. Adjust journal articles as needed. ? Part 3: Final Paper: Revise the full draft. The final paper must be a minimum eight (8) pages (including cover and reference pages) in length. It must include at least six (6) references (beyond course material) using current research studies published in scholarly journals from 2011- 2016. In addition to submitting the final paper (Part 3) in class, each student is required to upload their paper to an online repository. ? Research Presentation: Present significant findings from your research paper in a short PowerPoint presentation. The instructor and class will critique speakers. A grade of a zero plus a five percent deduction from your final project grade will be given if this requirement is not met. 4 How to Be Successful in this Class ? Use APA writing style based on elements in the Publication Manual (6th ed.). ? Complete every part of the project and complete all assignments on time; otherwise you will fall behind. ? Carefully correct all errors, spellcheck, edit, and proofread each draft. ? Be responsive to comments and suggestions from the instructor to improve each section of the paper. ? Keep your project organized in a sturdy two pocket folder. Keep all graded materials and grading sheets as they are returned. You will include previously graded material and grading forms with each part of the assignment. Paper clip hard copies (e.g., paper, grading forms, etc.). ? Read the course packet. Read the course packet. Read the course packet. It is important to read and follow all instructions for this project in the course packet. Most students lose a significant amount of points on their assignments simply because they have not followed directions. ? Come to class! I provide an overview of each assignment with additional assistance on APA style. Students who miss a lot class generally do not do well on the project. ? When in doubt, ASK FOR HELP! There are NO stupid questions! Therefore, feel free to schedule an appointment to meet with me EARLY in the writing process, e-mail me, or speak with me after class. I want you to succeed on this project and am happy to help you reach that goal! Perfection is not expected, but you are expected to put in hard work and your best effort. LET’S BEGIN! 5 SELECTING A TOPIC Please take a moment to generate some potential research paper topics for this course. ? Look for topic ideas in the Benokraitis (2015) textbook and review the “List of Potential Paper Topics” on following page. You can also conduct a preliminary search on OhioLINK or online. ? Topics are based on a first come, first serve basis. Therefore, all topics must be approved by the instructor and must focus on an appropriate issue related to this course. Note: Certain topics will not be permitted for this project based on the availability of research on the topic and if you can critically analyze the topic. If your topic is a subject that relates to your major, it must be tailored to suit this course, relate to family issues, and be able to be researched from a social science perspective. ? Finally, this is not a “How to” (e.g., how to adopt a child), nor is this a paper about your personal experiences (e.g., essay, argumentative paper, persuasive paper, etc.). This writing project is a research paper based on research findings from current studies printed in scholarly journals only. ? ***REMEMBER: YOU CANNOT PROCEED WITH THE FIRST PART OF THIS PROJECT WITHOUT AN APPROVED TOPIC*** Submit three potential topics. Rank order (1st, 2nd, & 3rd choice) your list of topic ideas related to individual and family development. Also write a one to two sentence justification for each selection. You will not receive full credit unless both parts are completed. Example: Karen Clarke Potential Topics 1. Birth Order: I am the middle child of three children and have a tight relationship with my siblings since we have become adults. I am interested in looking at those relationships. 2. Single Parenthood: I work in a daycare and see a lot of single mothers. I want to have a better understanding of these types of families. 3. Military Families: My husband has been deployed five times since we got married and this topic really hits home right now. ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSION Type this assignment. Submit in class on the date specified on the syllabus. *You can also place it in my mailbox for earlier consideration. If you opt to do this, place the time and date on your paper before you submit it. 6 A List of Potential Topics to Get You Started NOTE: Topics related to abuse, depression, obesity, eating disorders, and food choices cannot be used for this paper as they will not lend themselves to an appropriate critical analysis. Part 1 cannot be accepted without prior assignments completed. The Purpose of this assignment is to Locate Sources. ? Begin library search for journal articles once your topic has been approved ? Determine if there are sufficient and appropriate resources available for the research paper ? Become more familiar with the subject and further refine the topic and narrow the focus of the paper ? Identify subheadings based on findings from research studies related to your research topic ? Begin initial aspects of the paper: research question, introduction and purpose, develop subheadings, and cite references. ? Practice APA writing style for documentation. 1. DEVELOP A RESEARCH QUESTION ? Determine the focus of your paper by developing a research question. ? You must examine your topic from an analytical social science perspective. You may have to change your focus (not the topic) to find one that provides you with ample sources and suits the requirements of this course. For example: General Topic: Birth Order/Sibling Hierarchy Research Question (paper focus): How does sibling hierarchy effect individuals in later life? 2. LIBRARY SEARCH/LOCATE APPROPRIATE SOURCES ? Conduct a library search for current research studies and locate at least 6-8 quantitative and/or qualitative research studies related to your research topic published from 2011-2016 which can be saved in PDF format. ? Each article must be a minimum of 8 pages of text (not including reference pages); include different authors, years, and journals. These articles CANNOT be research/literature reviews, book reviews, research briefs, other scholarly journals that are not studies, the course textbook, books, brochures, magazines, Web pages, newspapers, etc. ? When you save your files, name them Article 1, Article 2, Article 3, etc. Your articles will be uploaded to Blackboard (see Assignment Submission). 3. SET UP YOUR PAPER (THIS WILL BE A THREE PAGE ASSIGNMENT) Page 1-Cover Page ? Follow proper APA format to set up paper. ? Double space all text. Set 1” margins on all sides of paper, and set up header (running head) and page numbering. ? Use appropriate font (e.g., Times New Roman (12 pt), Calibri (12 pt), Arial (10 pt), or Tahoma (10 pt). All documents must use black ink and 8½” x 11” white paper and print paper single-sided. ? For this part only, place your research question on the cover page instead of the title. ? For this course, the Cover Page must include: Running head and page number in the header, paper title, your name, and university affiliation on each assignment. On page 1, the running head and title must consist of a short version of your research question (essentially your topic): 8 Running head: SIBLING HIERARCHY 1 How does sibling hierarchy effect adults in later life? Karen Clarke Youngstown State University Page 2-Introduction and Subheadings ? After page 1, omit the phrase “Running head” and retain the manuscript head along with consecutive page numbering. The manuscript head will appear at the top each subsequent page of the document (see set-up below). SIBLING HIERARCHY 2 ? On page 2, center and bold the Working Title, double space, then begin the Introduction (do not include the word “Introduction”—it is understood in APA). ? The Introduction should provide the reader with a framework for your paper. For this paper, the Introduction section should be no more and no less than ½-page in length. Present a brief and concise overview of your topic and indicate why the topic is important to individual or family life. Include a few citations and relevant statistics related to your topic (if applicable). Use an objective, analytical tone. Avoid the use if first person and personal accounts. End the Introduction section (last sentence) with the purpose of the paper. Use this sentence verbatim to provide consistency between papers: Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to examine the scholarly literature on [insert your topic here] based on research written over the past five years. ? Following the Introduction section, center the next main heading entitled The Review of the Literature. ? Read through your journal articles. Based on areas covered within your journals, identify 2-3 preliminary subheadings related to your research topic. These subheadings will identify the major aspects that will be discussed in your paper (these may change when you write your draft). ? Subheadings should be flush left, bold, and major words capitalized. Subheadings are short and concise. ? Following the subheadings, center the next main heading entitled Conclusion. Do not write an actual conclusion. 9 SIBLING HIERARCHY 2 Sibling Hierarchy: Effects on the Individual in Later Life Family therapy psychologists have observed that sibling hierarchy can have many effects on an individual later on in life. Review of the Literature Sibling Conflict Quality Relationships Commitments in Sibling Relationships Conclusion Page 3-Reference Page ? Always begin a new page for your References. Center the heading: References. ? Provide a complete APA citation for each reference that will be cited in your research paper (minimum of six (6) research studies beyond course material from (6) different samples, authors, and journals). ? Avoid the use of Citation Generators as they often do not correctly follow APA format (6th ed.). ? Arrange the reference list in alphabetical order based on the last name of the first author of each article. 10 SIBLING HIERARCHY 3 References Bascoe, S. M., Davies, P. T., & Cummings, E. M. (2012). Running head: SIBLING HIERARCHY 1 Sibling Hierarchy: Effects on the Individual in Later Life Karen Clarke Youngstown State University Introduction (1/2 page) ? Omit the words “Running head” when you begin page 2, but retain the short title in all caps. Start with working titled centered, followed by the introduction. Revise your introduction if needed. Do not forget to end with the purpose of the paper (Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to examine the scholarly literature on [insert your topic here] based on research written over the past five years.). Review of the Literature (4 ½ pages) ? Next, begin with the heading Review of the Literature. This is the body of the paper. The Review of the Literature provides an overview of the topic and informs the reader of the findings related to individual and/or family development. Information should come from your six sources and include the relevant issues, major trends/themes, a synthesis of pertinent research findings, similarities and differences among research findings, and major conclusions of the authors written from a third person perspective. DO NOT include personal opinions. Use two or three (2-3) subheadings throughout this section (organize information by similarity of content). Cite in-text from six (6) different journal articles (2011-2016) within the paper. ? Avoid direct quotes. For this assignment, it is better to paraphrase and provide a citation. No more than one to two direct quotes are allowed for this paper. A direct quote should be used when the content is too profound to place in your own words or if paraphrasing the material would change the author’s intent. A significant loss of points will be loss if you use numerous direct quotes. 13 ? ADDITIONAL SOURCES: Thus far the goal of this project was to locate at least six current sources on your topic. However, other sources may be added (beyond the approved six) if needed. *Additional sources must be scholarly, full text journal articles in PDF format published from 2006-2016. You may NOT use a Web page, HTML article, book, newspaper, or government report. Additional sources can be a literature review, essay, research brief, shorter article (less than 8 pages), or quantitative/qualitative study. Please consult the instructor if you have a question about these types of sources.
